Today’s Modern Street Hemi Shootout featured racer is Juan Segarra, who has been racing this 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T since he bought it new back in October of 2004. Segarra has been participating in MSHS events since 2011, with his first event awards dating back to 2012. In the past few years, he has won the Modified Class at the 2020 VMP, 2020 MIR and 2021 MIR events, along with finishing second in the Modified Class at 2021 VMP and winning the Bracket Class at that same event.
Segarra said that his Magnum spends most of its time on the track, but he does cruise from time to time. In 2021, he attended the Magnum Mafia meet and picked up an award, so he scored some “show to go along with the go”. While he prefers to “scratch his itch for racing with the MSHS community”, he does some local racing as well. He has also been racing the Magnum since LX platform events began years back at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey. He has an award plaque for “Late Model Mopar Muscle 1 – 5.7 and Under Winner”, which he believes came from one of the first formal LX track events back in 2006. He also participated in the “HHP Racing Modern Mopar Drags” until the track closed.
However, his greatest racing memories come from MSHS events. He went on to say this about the experience.
“Coming to the MSHS events is so much more than the competition (which is tight in all classes). The camaraderie in the pits among old and new racers is amazing with folks helping each other out lending a wrench, rolling up their sleeves or just giving some advice. The friendships made over the years always blows my mind how it all started with a vehicle purchase for a family car. I had never gone down the 1320 until I met up with this group on LXFORUMS while looking to add a few ponies to the wagon.”
Segarra’s Dodge Magnum R/T was built by True Street Performance, powered by a 426 cubic inch Hemi from Arrington Performance and topped with a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger, with Hemituner performance handling the tuning duties. The car has a nitrous system, but he has not used it since the supercharger was installed. Power is sent to the rear wheels by means of a Paramount Performance NAG1 transmission, a Paramount Performance Ford 8.8-inch rear differential and Driveshaft Shop driveshaft and axles.
Segarra’s Dodge Magnum R/T has run a best quarter mile time of 10.259 at 133.99 miles per hour, and it that was run without the nitrous – just boost.
During the off-season, Segarra only did some routine maintenance on his wicked wagon. He is currently considering the new generation of Whipple superchargers, but he wants to see how they hold up to abuse and he doesn’t want to worry about supply chain issues. He does understand that making one work on his 6.1-based 426 will be a challenge, but for now, he is waiting to see how the new units perform in other vehicles. His goals for the 2022 racing season are to compete in the 10.5 class for at least 3 events in the MSHS including VMP in April, The Rock in May and MIR in October. Based on his success at the VMP and MIR events over the past few years, Juan Segarra will be one of the top competitors in that class in 2022.
